we watched first position last night and was like "wow"

last night, yangkyu and i watched first position
have you seen it?
boy. i was blown away by the talent of these young people!
and they looked so calm and confident on stage.
i have a secret crush on ballet dancers. i wanted to be one when i was younger
{ok and i wanted to be a tap dancer too.. oh yeah and a dolphin trainer and an astronaut.. you know.. kid dreams.. but i digress}

when i was younger, i was actually on a different stage. as a flutist.
i was trained at the manhattan school of music precollege division. that meant every saturday it was personal lessons, theory and ear training, electives, chorus, orchestra, oh my!
and every day it meant hours and hours of practice.
i gave everything up right before auditioning for juilliard and forever breaking my mother's heart. {well, i think she forgave me when i reached adult age...}

looking back, i was never scared of auditions, performing on a large stage or in front of intimate audiences. a panel of judges scrutinizing every move, note, sound and breath you take was not a bit scary at all. i don't know where all that childhood confidence came from. or where it went. as i got older, i think i got more timid and shy.

or maybe it was the confidence of an artist. just like these young people in first position.
i'm still so enamored by them
{and we were so happy for joan sebastian zamora! ok. that's it! no spoilers here!}

have a great weekend, everyone.

xoxo,
jane

  1. You can play the flute? How wonderful!! You should totally do a video one day!

    I've heard about this First position movie and it is on my to-do list. I danced for 7 years when I was younger and lost the urge. I always have it in the back of my mind though. I'm glad you liked the movie so I'm sure I'll be blown away!!

    Have a great weekend Jane! =)

  2. these types of movies always are so interesting! have you seen mad hot ballroom? that's a good kids dancing documentary too. it is crazy how when you are a kid, you don't really know to be nervous as much. and CRAZY how amazingly talented kids can be.

    i would have been awful at ballet personally

    1. Thank you. I guess I didn't like the strictness of always practicing and not being able to hang out with friends during the weekends. The town I grew up, everyone spent saturdays during the fall at high school football games. and my friends were all in pep band (later marching band). i waned to be with them but couldn't. kinda childish.. but i was only a kid! :)

  6. Did you rent this or is it in theaters? It looks great! I use to watching Breaking Point and it is interesting how the dancers have a very hearty appetites and people think they eat like birds..um you can't you are an athlete. Also a lot of the male ballet dancers are not gay. I will check it out.

  7. I admire the flexibility and gracefulness of ballet dancers! I'm the type to be terrified of any public performance or audition, from music to speeches. It dwindles down as it goes on, but I suppose it's something that you have to do over and over to get used to~

    oh, and i'm sorry for your loss about your mother in law... may she rest in peace.

  11. I've had that in my queue for a couple weeks now, it looks really good! And wow! Flautist life sound difficult. I took ballet for a year my first year in college, it really improved some aspects in my bellydance.

  12. I can't agree more and I ever wondered how did we lose all that confidence as we grow older. I guess as we grow older, we get more self conscious and grow more aware to the people around us and how they look or even judge us, and we get scared. And everything seemed so simple and easy when we were younger. Those young lucid dreams, they all change as we grow old :'( I wished I could still continue dreaming those dreams, because I'd really love to be in it one day. ♥

    1. Yeah - I never realized how confident I was when I was younger. Sometimes when I hear stories I am shocked that that was me! :)

  13. I always wanted to be a ballerina, too, and took many dance classes (tap, jazz, etc) however what we want is not always what we should be as was evident from my skills or lack there of. ;) You've sold me on First position!

    You must be a very strong young woman to have handled such pressure with ease. I cannot express how much I admire that in a person!!!

  14. I'm a HUGE documentary fan and I just loved this film. I used to perform with a modern dance company, so this really struck home to me. These kids are amazing. They are so dedicated and it shows in their abilities.
